Ghostface is back in the fresh and fearful Sceam 6

FILM REVIEW
Scream 6

Headliner Chicago

Picture

In 1996, Scream brought new life into the slasher film genre. Back before texting and cell phones, it was common to accidentally dial the wrong number, but would end up with a 'sorry I dialed the wrong number' and that was it. Since the first Scream movie came out, people have been frightened that an unknown caller could also be in your home and try to murder you.

Let’s go back to the very first scene of the first film, it all starts with a phone ring and ultimate demise of Drew Barrymore's character Casey. In the original Scream. Drew Barrymore picks up her house landline & in this film it starts with a first date call, who gets lost. Of course, technology has changed over the past 27 years, yet the voice, ping or ring of an unknown caller still sends shivers down our collective spines.

In this film we find Tara (Jenna Ortega) and Sam (Melissa Barrera) coming to terms and moving on in different ways since leaving Woodsboro at the end of Scream V. Tara is trying to enjoy college and move on with her life, and Sam is trying everything in her power to protect or overprotect Tara. From the beginning it appears that Sam is being  overbearing while trying to protect her sister, Of course that lasts only a few moments before they realize Ghostface is back!

Set in New York City on the opposite coast of Woodsboro, no one is safe in the crowded busy city as the killer could be anyone or anywhere. Fan favorite Kirby (Hayden Panettiere) also returns for this film along with legacy character Gail Weathers (Courteney Cox). As soon as the murders began, Gail is back to her old ways, but as one of the most recognizable faces from the franchise, fans will be wondering if Gail will meet her demise in this installment.

No spoilers, but as someone who has followed this series from the very first film, this film is very aware of what it's doing and how it follows or doesn't follow the rules of sequels, requels, franchises and legacy characters and makes it one heck of a ride! If you're a fan of the franchise, you'll love this film.
